Who are Google Panda and Penguin?

Content | SEO

Panda and Penguin are two important Google algorithm updates that were first released in February 2011 and April 2012.

Panda Update

The Panda update was designed to penalize low-quality sites by lowering their rankings on Google and return sites with higher-quality content near the top of the search results. You can evaluate your website by asking a few questions, such as; “Does it provide valuable content to your users?”, “Is the bounce rate high?”, “Is your website stuffed with advertising or low quality content instead of valuable information about your products and services?”. If the answers are yes, it might be time for you to take a deep dive and start building better quality content for your users.

Penguin Update

The Penguin update was aimed at decreasing the search engine rankings of websites that violate Google’s Webmaster Guidelines, such as keyword stuffing, purchasing links, deliberate creation of duplicate content, over-optimization of anchor text, and more. What worked before to gain visibility on search engines may no longer work. If your website was affected by any of these two updates, start building quality content that users naturally want to share. Focus on providing value to the end users and over time, you will see your rankings improve and your visibility increase. Additional readings on Panda and Penguin
